Development
The idea for the Conjuring actually began nearly 20 years prior to release when the Warrens played their original interview with the Perron family to the producer Tony DeRosa-Grund. DRG tried to get the Conjuring made into a film for nearly 14 years without success. Script writers were brought in to refine the script and the viewpoint changed from the Perrons to the Warrens themselves. New Line Cinema took on the task and began working on the film.
Production;
The Conjuring was shot over a 38 day period in a variety of locations, primarily at EUE/Screen Gems Studios as well as other locations in and around Wilmington, North Carolina filming also took place at the University of North Carolina Campus. The budget for the whole production of the Conjuring was $20 million which gave it one of the largest budgets ever for a successful horror film.

USP;
The conjuring has two main selling points;
1) the film is based on a true story as it is about the "true case studies of the Warrens" who were paranormal investigators in America. They wrote down their experiences and that is ultimately what the film is based on. Not many films are based on true stories and the thought of something as disturbing as this happening shocks the viewers and makes them question if paranormal forces do exist. This strengthens the dark atmosphere surrounding the film and helps reinforce its place in the horror genre.
2) The film has a happy ending. This goes against the conventions of a normal horror movie as everything is supposed to end with horrific consequences or a nail biting cliff hanger. This ending surprises audiences, wraps up any loose threads in the storyline and makes the film definitively unique. It makes the Conjuring stand out from the rest and as it is a original story it is not regurgitating the same conventions of other horror films.
Overall I believe the Conjuring was made to return the horror genre to its terrifying roots, many recent horror releases have failed to hit the mark and this original story revitalises the genre. I also feel that it was made because it was unique and caught the director and the producers eye. It does not regurgitate the same style of horror as previous films and I believe was created to put something different onto the scene. It may have broken box office records on release as but I believe it was more than just about the money.
